ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 22
October 28 – Reformation 500 Event
We want to be sure to have this date on everyone’s calendar. On Saturday, Oct. 28 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 pm OSLC is sponsoring an Oktoberfest. We are calling it our Reformation 500 Event as it is in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. We will have food, a band, dancing, soft drinks, beer, children’s events. Etc. and etc. It is going to be great fun. Plan to attend and invite everyone you can think of. We plan for this to be a Tyler-wide event.
Please Don’t Change the Thermostats
Please don’t change the thermostats in the worship space. On a number of Sundays the thermostats have been lowered to 65 degrees. That is hard on our electric bill and we are freezing out people in the front pews! The thermostats are all preset for worship.
Worship Schedule Feedback
We are trying a new worship schedule this fall. Please share your thoughts, concerns, ideas, and suggestions with the members of the church council. We need your feedback.
Our Confirmation service for this fall will be next Sunday. We have two young people affirming their faith – Ben Lundy and Nicholas Henriksen. Please keep these young men in your payers as we approach this special day.
We have two “discipleship opportunities” to keep in front of you this fall, both of which we talked about in worship the last few weeks. First, On Sunday mornings, when you come into the worship space and sit down, please take a few moments and pray. Pray for our service, pray for those leading worship, pray for God to fill us with His Spirit. Take a few seconds, or a few minutes, whatever works for you. Let’s intentionally have all of our members supporting our worship with prayer! THANK YOU.
Second, we want all of our members to have a Bible and a good study bible. There is a table in the church gathering space; on it are bibles, study bibles, and brochures to help with Bible study. If you don’t have one of these, please take one! We want all of our members reading the Word of God.
High School Youth
Our High School youth are meeting on Sundays at 11:00, right after worship. Please come for the Sunday school, share in worship, and then stay for lunch and the youth meeting! Please call Brian Eng for more details!
October Plans – Reformation 500
Here are some things coming up for October. This is going to be fun!
#1. Pastor Mark will preach on what the Lutheran movement is all about. Lutherans have some incredible insights into what God is doing; this anniversary is a great opportunity to lift that up. Here is our preaching schedule:
Sunday, Oct. 22 – Gifts of Grace – Baptism and Communion
Sunday, Oct. 29 – Keeping the promise clean – Law and Gospel
#2, and of even more fun, OSLC is going to be sharing in a 6 week ecumenical look at the Reformation. Beginning Thursday night, Sept. 28, different religious leaders in Tyler will talk on the implications of the Reformation from their faith tradition. This should be a fascinating time to explore and learn. Here is the schedule:
Thursday, Oct. 26 – Blaine Davis on Luther and Vocation
Thursday, November 2 – all of the leaders in a panel discussion on what this means as we move onward in ministry.
These events will be at the Foundry Coffee shop in downtown Tyler. Sessions will be from 7:00 until 8:00 pm. Plan to come and invite all sorts of people.
#3, as a culmination for all this, we are hosting a Reformation party. On Saturday, Oct. 28 we are having Oktoberfest here at OSLC. We are opening this to all the churches in town, we envision this as a time of Christian fellowship and sharing together. There will be brats, hotdogs, great food, soft drinks, beer, a band, and all sorts of activities. We are going to celebrate with brothers and sisters in Christ. We are going to celebrate the Reformation of course, but even more the Lord Jesus Christ who is making this world new!
Help Needed Before and During Oktoberfest
You have responded so well to our requests for donations and help to get ready for our Oktoberfest Event! Now is the time to ask for help during Oktoberfest. Things are moving right along, but we could still use your help.
Would you consider:
Helping with painting faces at the Face Painting Booth?
Making a dessert for the cake walk?
Calling out numbers at the cake walk or Candy Corn Bingo?
Standing outside of Bounce House to limit number of "bouncers"?
Judging the Halloween costume contest?
Please see/call Carmen Nazario 972-533-9935 or Kim Butler 903-521-0231 to sign up.
We can still use more donations, especially water and diet Coke and diet Dr. Pepper.
Please help any way you can — donations of water and drinks before this event and/ or donations of time and energy during the Oktoberfest event.
Primetimers—Working Lunch—November 9th at Noon
ALL Primetimers are invited to attend our ShoeBox work day and enjoy hot sandwiches, salad, and dessert beginning at noon on November 9th. We would love to have a record turnout - and we can do that!
After lunch, meeting, and clean up we will start to pack our 50 shoeboxes. In addition to packing we will have a few kits to assemble, soccer balls to deflate, and dolls to dress. The best of the day is knowing how many smiles these shoeboxes will bring to girls and boys, who have so little to bring them smiles. Please come!
Notice—Yard Signs for Oktoberfest
Thanks to those of you that are displaying yard signs. Would you please write on your sign
